In unsavoury hands, Gen AI can be very harmful. Security experts believe that cybercriminals will use Gen AI to help filter, correlate and categorise their massive amounts of fraudulently obtained data faster and more efficiently than ever before.
As for third-party risks, consider something as innocuous as a file transfer service. An organisation can take precautions to defend against attacks on its own infrastructure but it has little control over third-party infrastructure. Attackers could exploit this to access an organisation’s systems to infect them, steal data, or disrupt operations.
The Google Cloud Cybersecurity Forecast 2024 report has called for caution when it comes to large language models (LLMs), artificial intelligence (AI) and Gen AI tools. LLMs are making it more difficult to spot phishing emails by making these smarter and less grammatically incorrect, personalising them and adding cultural context to make them appear legitimate.
Ensuring the complete security of your network is also crucial, as connected devices and IoT environments are easily exploited by attackers. It only takes a single device to be infiltrated for unlimited access to be gained to an entire network.
“Cyber criminals have everything they need to deceive unsuspecting users, consumers and even public officials through AI-engineered deception tactics,” says Charles Henderson, Global Head, IBM X-Force. In light of this, he says, we’re likely to see improved deep fakes, audio fakes and very convincing AI-crafted phishing emails as cyber criminals increase their efforts to deceive and defraud.
