South Africa’s ICT sector: a R243-billion industry

Despite the tumultuous past two years and the economic slowdown, SA’s ICT sector has shown encouraging growth, and recorded total revenue of more than R243 billion, says ICASA in its latest State of the ICT Sector in SA report.

Using data from a 12-month period, the report examined the performance of and developments in SA’s ICT sector - made up of telecoms, broadcasting and postal services. It found that the ICT sector recorded R243.6 billion in revenue in 2021. The telecoms sector generated the lion’s share of this: R200 billion. Revenue generated from mobile data services amounted to R53.1 billion of this figure.

Additionally, the total number of 4G/LTE devices grew from 32 million in 2020 to 47 million in 2021 - a significant increase of 47%.
